Rhythm Voices

Contents > Rhythm Motif Editor > Rhythm Voices

Each rhythm motif consists of 6 independent rhythm voices (this is rather like having 6 sub-tracks inside each rhythm track). Each voice has the following set of controls.

Click on the instrument name to select the desired drum/rhythm sound for the voice from a pop-up menu. This menu uses the General MIDI standard mapping of drum/rhythm instruments to key numbers.

You can also click with the right mouse button to step through the choices (or click with the right mouse button while holding down the CTRL key to step backwards through the choices).

The Mute button disables a voice when highlighted.

The Solo button enables a voice and disables all other voices when highlighted.

Unlike the Track Header Solo buttons, these buttons only affect the voices used in the same motif.

When both buttons are highlighted the Solo button overrides the Mute button.

The MX buttons when highlighted make the selected voices mutually exclusive. A typical use for the MX buttons is to automatically prevent an open high hat and a closed high hat from both occurring at the same time.

Use the Menu button to affect the whole row at once...

Reset Reset to all off and default strengths
Randomise fill with random pattern
Fill with On all on
Fill with On, Off on, off repeating pattern
Fill with On, Off, Off on, off, off repeating pattern
Fill with On, Off, Off, Off on, off, off, off repeating pattern
Reset Strengths reset strengths
Randomise Strengths random strengths
Rising Strengths fill with rising strengths (crescendo)
Falling Strengths fill with falling strengths (decrescendo/diminuendo)
Increase Strengths slightly increase all the strengths
Decrease Strengths slightly decrease all the strengths
Invert change on to off and off to on
Reverse reverse the pattern
Rotate Left shift pattern to left (earlier in time)
Rotate Right shift pattern to right (later in time)

Rather than manually setting each step, it is sometimes easier to use the Random button a few times to find an interesting sequence.

Use the final group of controls to enter the actual pattern of hits. Use the buttons to switch hits on/off and the knobs to adjust the strengths of individual hits.

The instrument selection and the Mute, Solo and MX buttons for each voice are not shared between motifs. In other words each motif has it's own unique settings. Use the Copy and Paste buttons to copy settings from one motif to another.
