Starting a New Song

The following steps demonstrate one way to quickly start building a song...

1. Start a new song...
2. Create a simple bass line...
  • Locate the row for Track 7 - labelled Bass 1.
  • Click on one of the track's Motif Arrangement buttons.
  • Select Edit Motif 1... from the pop-up menu.
  • A Lead/Bass Motif Editor for "Motif 1 of Bass 1 in Section A" should appear.
  • Locate the Random button in the top left-hand corner of the Motif Editor's window.
  • Click on the Random button a few times, until you've found a bass riff that you like. (If you can't hear anything see Troubleshooting).
  • Press the ESC key to close the Motif Editor.
3. Add a simple chordal accompaniment...
  • Back on the Section A page, locate the row for Track 4 - labelled Chordal 1.
  • Click on one of the track's Motif Arrangement buttons.
  • Select Edit Motif 1... from the pop-up menu.
  • A Chordal Motif Editor for "Motif 1 of Chordal 1 in Section A" should appear.
  • Locate the Random button in the top left-hand corner of the Motif Editor' s window.
  • Click on the Random button a few times, until you've found a chordal riff that you like.
  • Press the ESC key to close the Motif Editor.
4. Add some chord changes...
  • Back on the Section A page, locate the row of controls labelled Chords.
  • Click on the chord row's Random button a few times, until you've found an interesting chord arrangement.
5. Create a lead melody...
  • Locate the row for Track 1- labelled Lead 1.
  • Click on the track's Menu button.
  • Select Generate Theme from the pop-up menu.
  • Repeat the last two steps, until you've found an interesting lead melody.
6. Add a simple rhythm accompaniment...
  • Locate the row for Track 10 - labelled Rhythm 1.
  • Click on one of the track's Motif Arrangement buttons.
  • Select Edit Motif 1... from the pop-up menu.
  • A Rhythm Motif Editor for "Motif 1 of Rhythm 1 in Section A " should appear.
  • Locate the Random button at the top of the Motif Editor' s window.
  • Click on the Random button a few times, until you've found a pattern that you like.
  • Press the ESC key to close the Motif Editor.
7. Adjust the mix...
  • Display the Mix Page by clicking on the Page Selection Tab.
  • Locate the row of controls for Track 1- labelled Lead 1.
  • Change the sound of track 1 to a Flute by clicking on the Patch control and selecting Pipe then Flute from the pop-up menus.
  • Adjust the Volume for track 1 by dragging the Vol knob up/down while holding down the left mouse button. (See basic operation for important information about using knobs and other controls ).
  • Adjust the stereo position of track 1 by dragging the Pan knob up/down.
  • Adjust the other tracks too.

The "Random" functions that appear throughout JUMP are not entirely random. They often use fairly smart code to generate musically useful material.
